What is a Doula?
There are different types of Doulas. All different kinds. I am mainly a Birth Doula and a Postpartum Doula. Both wonderful and they go hand in hand.
A Birth Doula is a trained, non-medical professional who provides education during pregnancy and support throughout labor and delivery. Their role is to offer both physical and emotional assistance.
A Postpartum Doula is honestly much the same. We provide non-medical but evidenced based practices on both the postpartum mother and the new baby. We support both physically and emotionally in the home during the 4th trimester.
My name is Makenzie, and I’m a Dubai-based doula originally from Texas. I’ve lived in Dubai for 14 years. My mission is to educate and empower you throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, helping you feel confident in yourself and your abilities as a mother.
Common
Misconceptions
-
Doulas are not the same as midwives. A midwife is a medical professional, while a doula provides non-medical support. Doulas do not perform cervical checks or monitor your baby’s heartbeat. Instead, we educate you throughout pregnancy and remain by your side for your ENTIRE labor, offering both physical and emotional support.
-
This is actually a misconception that I had before I was pregnant. The truth is, each doula is different. While we all share the same goal—to support you—the way we do so can vary. That means there’s definitely a doula out there who’s the right fit for you!
That’s why the first meeting is so important. Make sure you are super comfortable with the doula you hire. -And if you’re not feeling it, don’t feel shy to change to someone else.
-
This goes with the one above. The role of a doula is not to judge you for your choices. We are here to support you!
-
Completely false! We actually help educate your partner (whether its your spouse, sister, mother, etc.) on how they can help as well! That’s a big part of the training.
-
A nanny is a WONDERFUL tool to have. But a nanny cannot do all that a doula can. And while we love to hold a baby while you nap or shower, a postpartum doula is not a nanny.
We are there to support the mother in the home from the inside out. Nourishing and healing meals and snacks, massages, herbal baths and teas, wisdom and evidence based knowledge. Emotional and physical support and so much more.
